If you don't mind using a omouse and the KK software then that's not a big deal. The 2 main features would be lightguide (which is only useful on a small handful of officially supported NKS plugins, mainly NI plugins) and the screens which will allow you to easily browse and load sounds from the keyboard. With respect to the A series Vs the S series you need to look at the actual features that are offered in the S and if it is worth your time. Even with templates saved it's just far better and faster when using KK it's just not a solution to every problem tho. Sure, the 8 encoders at a time is a limitation and having to tab through pages of controls can be a bit tedious at times but it's far less so than having to manually load presets, map controls and then manage that in a DAW every time. KK is a great system to help find sounds and start playing to get ideas down fast especially with the sound preview feature and auto-mapped controls. I'm not one to really recommend your personal choice for one or the other as it depends how you will work. NKS is definitely the big draw card with loads of instruments supported especially by users. Is the A49 too limited? Do you feel like it's worth that huge jump in price? Does the Arturia KeyLab compare to these or does NKS integration make the KKs way ahead of it? In terms of the A49 vs the S49 am I giving up much besides the screens? The screens look awesome but the price is rough. From what I've seen, the KK boards will pair the best with the software especially if I am mainly staying in Maschine. If I go with a true midi keyboard I've looked at the KK ones and also the Arturia KeyLab 49 as well since it seems to offer a lot of control options (knobs, faders, etc). After comparing the MX to some of my VSTs I don't really feel like I'm adding much in terms of sound and the only thing I feel I gain from the MX sounds is to use it standalone with the MPC Live. I recently bought a Yamaha MX49 hoping to use it as a midi controller but also have the bonus of having more sounds. I also sometimes like to work with the MPC Live. A lot of my work is done with Maschine and other plugins (Komplete) and other synths so naturally the Komplete Kontrol boards caught my eye. I've been trying to decide on a 49 key keyboard to add to my setup.
